Talbot Community School delayed as mold cleanup continues

Students at Talbot Community School will have a delayed start to the school year because of mold inside the building.

P-K through fifth grade will now start on Friday, Sept. 8, instead of on Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 as originally planned.

Originally, Aspergillus mold was found inside 16 classrooms and two offices in the middle of August. Officials say contractors were hired to address the mold with detailed cleaning and mold mitigation.

Upon further testing, mold was found in other parts of the building.

As of Sept. 31, most of the building has been cleared, but mold remains in some areas.

Superintendent Ryan Scallon wrote: "With the lab testing companies closed over the holiday weekend, we won't have enough spaces confirmed to occupy for a safe start of the school year. Delaying opening the building for two days will allow extra time for further cleaning, testing and prep."

Moving forward, HVAC specialists will work to reduce humidity in the building to address the root cause of the issue.

Aspergillus mold doesn't make most people sick. However, those with weakened immune systems or lung diseases are at a higher risk of developing health problems.

Parents can stop by the school to pick up bagged meals from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sept. 6 and Sept. 7.
