North Carolina officials say toxigenic mold found in schools

Toxigenic mold has been found at two Alamance-Burlington School System buildings.

The school district said in a news release Wednesday that environmental inspectors discovered toxigenic mold called Chaetomium at Cummings High School and Broadview Middle School.

The school district said Chaetomium typically results from invasive water damage over time according to inspectors.

More than 700 workers from Builder Services of NC started work at five schools, including Cummings High School and Broadview Middle School, on Tuesday.

Remediation efforts are now underway at both schools, including cleaning and removing sheetrock, furniture, and other building materials impacted, the school district said.

"We have got to do a better job as far as maintenance and fixing these schools," says Dan Ingle, an ABSS board member. "And we need to ensure that this never ever happens again."

Crews are also cleaning Williams High School, Eastlawn Elementary, and Haw River Elementary this week. They will begin work at Western High, Western Middle, Southern Middle, Sylvan Elementary, Garrett Elementary, South Mebane Elementary, and Eastern High School later today, according to the school district.

Mold remediation will also be needed at E.M. Holt and Alexander Wilson, but the school system did not say when work would begin.

The school district postponed the first day of school by a week to Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Earlier this month, mold was removed from Andrews and Newlin Elementary.
